寅·虎 | THE MOUNTAIN KING

It came down from the clouds through the wildest wind in the great wilderness — its coat the color of purest moonlight and glacier, the golden mark on its brow the supreme sovereignty granted by heaven and earth itself. It is the true ruler of mountain and forest, the ancient sovereign before whom all creatures yield. Its authority is not performed. Every breath it draws moves the storm. Its very existence is the absolute suppression of all chaos and fear.

In the Shanhaijing, Luwu (陆吾) is the divine guardian of Kunlun Mountain — the axis of the world where heaven touched earth. He has nine great tails, a human face, and the claws of a tiger. He governs the nine domains of the celestial realm and keeps the four seasons turning. When the flood god Gonggong threatened to drown the world, the Celestial Emperor sent Luwu to hold the line. He fought nine times and was driven back nine times — but he held. He held until the winged dragon Yinglong and the hero Yu could channel the waters and save the world.

Luwu was not made to always win. He was made to hold the line — and that is the most sacred form of strength there is. The character 寅 (Yín) itself means “to be in awe of” — the Tiger’s authority does not demand respect. It commands it, through sacred responsibility carried without complaint.
