It came striding out of the great abyss, splitting the cloudscape like a peal of thunder made flesh — its body dark as a stormcloud held still, its horns massive as the ancient plows that first broke open chaos. In the Shanhaijing, the Kui (夔) is a one-legged thunder beast of the Eastern Sea — blue-grey, hornless, its voice rolling like thunder across five hundred leagues of ocean. When the Yellow Emperor Huangdi was losing the war against Chiyou, it was the skin of the Kui, stretched across a drum, whose single strike shook the earth for five hundred miles and turned the tide of the entire battle.

The Kui did not win the war. It made one sound — and made everything else possible.
